LAFI started a series of collaborations with local institutions to bring international programming to our communities in Maryland and Washington, DC. Among the new porgrams this season is the co-sponsoring of Teatro de la Luna's 9th International Festival of Hispanic Theater. As part of this festival will present Vida, Amor y Risa, a comedy performance by world acclaimed clown mime Carlos Alvarez from Colombia. Click here to visit our theater page for more info.

Other collaborations include music and Dance workshops with the renown Peruvian folkloric group Peru Negro at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center of the University of Maryland. (Click here to visit our music page for more info); and a collaboration with WPFW Sophie's Parlor for series of women film in March to celebrate International Women's Month. THe LAFI school will be offering Brazilian Percussion classes starting Tuesday February 21st, at 7:00 p.m. Visit the classes section for information on classes.

A new Escola de Samba is being formed by percussion students. If you are interested in Brazilian percussion or dance please send us an e-mail at info@lafi.org to let us know.


EL Palenque at LAFI LAFI Directors and Members

You could rent the Palenque at the Latin American Folk Institute (LAFI) for your events. The Palenque sits about 75 people and it is 700 sq feet. Rates are as follow:

Basic rate: $65/hour, ($55 to nonprofits)
Rate includes the use of sound and lightining equipment.

Last January, LAFI's Director of Program Carlos Gimenez was invited to play with the Mallarme Chamber Orchestra in Durham, North Carolina, for the American premiere of "Quinteto del Pájaro" (Quintet of the Bird) by Venezuelan composer Paul Desenne.
