In a prior incarnation, Rosi and Brian Amador played in Flor de Caña, when the world was different and Latin American folk music often was an emblem of solidarity with popular struggles and not, as it can be today, more an antidote to globalized homogeneity. They now form the core of Sol y Canto, covering Latin American folk music and New Song, with a special affection for Cuban selections. Brian’s baritone and expert guitar playing set off Rosi’s bongos and airy, hopeful voice; in concert — as in their recent performance at National Geographic, in Washington — his dry wit contrasts with her exuberance. In this, their third CD, Brian’s compositions accompany standards like Reclamo místico and Quiéreme mucho, with other pieces from Peru, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, and Mexico. Sol y Canto is perhaps best at lyrical songs like Silvio Rodríguez’ Rabo de nube and Simón Díaz’ beautiful Tonada de luna llena, but they can also pick up the beat of a son or a landó.
