Nostalgic Cuba in Washington DC

The music of Cuba comes again to the fore in Raíces Cubanas: A Cuban Mosaic, a musical show that explores the most important musical and dance traditions in Cuba since the turn of the century.

Conceived and directed by Argentinian Director Hugo Medrano, Raíces Cubanas presents a snapshot of habaneras, danzones, vieja trova, boleros, cha-cha-chá, mambo, son, rumba and congas. These are just some of the different rhythms and styles that Cuba has contributed to the music and dance repertoire of the world.

A highlight of the show will be a rendition of traditional Afro-Cuban rumba by Francisco Rigores, a venerated local folk singer from the province of Matanzas, Cuba. Born in 1936, Francisco was active as a young man in "Sábados de Rumba", a traditional weekend event famous for preserving and extending Afro-Cuban folkloric traditions. He was a favorite among the Abakuá and especially among the rumberos, strongly bracketing décimas with soulful, sinuous, daring dianas, and for authoring songs which balance witty social commentary and a deep sense of tradition.

A post-performance open panel discussion with the Director, cast and guest panelists will take place on Sunday, June 7, 1998. An exhibition on the poets and composers whose works are included in Raíces Cubanas: A Cuban Mosaic will be on display at the Theater during the run of this production.
