Beginning Spanish
For students with little or no prior knowledge of the language, this course emphasizes basic oral communication and everyday vocabulary. The course will be taught in Spanish and Englsih, using Latin American films as a language tool. Also included are practices in reading, writing and work in grammar and vocabulary building. Handouts will be provided. Standard text will be required.
Price: $200 (10 sessions, twice per week) or $99 once per week.
Advanced Spanish with Latin American and Spanish Cinema
This course will explore the main trends of films from Latin America and Spain, with emphasis given to historical and classic films and documentaries with elements of history, documentary, tragedy and comedy. The work and themes of different directors will be discussed, covering visual style, customs, history, and political and social issues depicted in the films. We will explore film theory and cinematography, acting styles, and critic's reviews. Students will have the opportunity to explore the cultural, political and social context, together with the movie's technical and artistic values. Films will be viewed in their original language (Spanish, Portuguese and French). The course will be taught in Spanish and is designed for students with a good background in the language. Prerequisite: advanced ability to understand and communicate in Spanish. Handouts will be provided.
