HOW TO REGISTER:
You can register online by submiting the Registration form. Or come by our office to register in person, meet instructors and fellow students. You can also register by sending an email to info@lafi.org with your name, phone number and the class you'd like to register for, and mail your $15 registration fee. Or call (301) 887-9331 (from noon to 5 pm).
Registration and tuition fees are due the first day of class.
REGISTRATION FEE: All students pay a registration fee of $15 per semester, regardless of how many classes you take. This fee is waived for LAFI members.

| ABOUT LAFI SCHOOL CLASSES |
The Latin American Folk Institute (LAFI) offers individual and group music instruction to adults and adolescents. Registration for the Fall 2005 semester ends Saturday September 17, 2005.
CLASS FEES
See class descriptions to find out the fees for a particular class. For most classes, students must register for an entire semester. A 10% discount is available to LAFI members who register for a group class (a full semester). This discount is not available for private lessons. Private lessons are $45 per hour and must be arranged directly with the instructor.

| We offer a variety of Cuban Percussion classes and Brazilian Percussion classes. Cuban Percussion group classes includes congas, clave, and timbales. Brazilian Percussion includes pandeiro, tamborin, and other hand drums. Drum set is offered as individual private class for both Cuban and Brazilian. |

Brazilian Percussion - Brazilian folkloric instruments (pandeiro, agogo, atabaques, ganza, caxixi and wooden sticks)
Instructor Gilberto Campello
This class will introduce students to an array of Braziian rhythms in their original instrumentation and provide comprehensive understanding of all the instruments and the relationship between their respective patterns. The complexity of the rhythms allows the integration of students of various levels from beginners to advanced. Music theory understanding is not required. Rhythms include Afro-sambas, Afoxe, Baiao and Coco and Maculele.

Brazilian Drum set - Study Brazilian rhythms adapted to the drum set, incorporating a variety of parts from different percussion ensembles. Three different levels are available, for players who are not familiar with Brazilian rhythms as well as more experienced students. Basic music reading skills are required.

Cuban Percussion - Conga 1: Beginner -Instructor Rafael Monteagudo Saturdays 12noon - 1:00pm
This class is devoted to the development of proper playing technique. Students will learn to understand basic clave patterns and its significance and placement in Latin American rhythms, dominate the fundamental conga strokes including the shuffle, develop control and hand independence through the use of accents, and their application to styles such as cha-cha-chá and salsa with one and two congas.

Intermediate Popular Conga -Instructor Rafael Monteagudo
Saturday 1:00Pm - 2:00 pm.
This class is offered to more advanced students who already dominate proper playing technique and have a very steady sense of rhythm and understanding of clave. The class will focus on advanced salsa fills and exercises and developing improvisational and soloing ability. This class will also introduce students to basic Afro-Cuban rumba patterns.

Bata Drums -Instructor Oscar Rousseaux
Saturdays 1 2 p.m.
This class focuses on rhythmic development and technical exercises. Students will learn basic understanding of drum conversations, and generic rhythms such as chacha and ñongo.

Orisha Song and Rumba - Instructor Marietta Ulacia
Saturdays 12-1pm
The class will analyze songs to try to gain a basic understanding of Yoruba history & mythology, and Rumba vocabulary, but the class will primarily be a call-and-response format. Printed song sheets with references to commercially available recordings and books will be made available to all the students. Students are encouraged to bring tape recorders to all of the classes in order to be able to review the songs.

Mondays 6pm
Beginning
Emphasis on proper playing technique and clean sound, using classical music and exercises. Students will be introduced to Latin American styles, such as cha-cha-cha, and will learn the significance of the percussion in Latin music and its relationship to the other instruments.

Venezuelan Cuatro - Instructor Carlos Gimenez
Learn strumming techniques, chord changes, and the application of cuatro playing to Venezuelan joropos, pasajes, bambucos and other Latin American genres such as Bolivian carnival. Students should have at least a basic understanding of music theory.

Beginner Latin Jazz Guitar - Instructor Richard Miller
Thursdays 4:30 - 5:30pm
Develop guitar technique based on the classical model as a support for playing Latin American guitar styles. This class introduces scales, chords and musical notation, and reading on the guitar while exploring the Latin American repertoire.

Intermediate Jazz Guitar - Instructor Richard Miller
Thursdays 5:30 - 6:30pm
Learn Latin American rhythms and grooves for the guitar, including samba, bossa nova, Cuban montunos, valses, boleros, and more. This class places a strong emphasis on developing right hand techniques, jazz chords and progressions, and music theory as it's applied to the guitar.

Advanced Jazz Guitar - Instructor Richard Miller

This class places a strong emphasis on jazz improvisation, advanced theory and scales for the guitar and Jazz and Latin repertoire.
